Launching the Program

With a click on Start Defence the program
launches without requiring any further installation.

Before proceeding, please read the following text, as it
makes sense to create an icon for the program right away.
Afterwards, launch Defence using the link above
and create the icon as described below.
(As long as this text remains on the screen, please do not
perform the action - otherwise, you would merely get
an icon for this text!)

Following the information on creating an icon, there is
information regarding the arrangement of Defence
on the screen, and a note on the offline operation.

Making an Icon

While creating an icon for the bridge program is generally
advisable, it is particularly important for smartphones,
as the entire screen can be utilized when the program is
launched via the icon. Otherwise, the window is reduced
by the browser interface elements.
On a large screen, this doesn't necessarily matter
- but it certainly does on small screens.

On a smartphone, the bridge program is easiest to use
when launched via its icon and held horizontally in the hand.

Here is how to proceed on the different systems:

iOS (iPad and iPhone)

After opening Defence via the link in Safari,
tap the Share menu and select Add to Home Screen
(which appears further down in the list of options;
you will therefore need to scroll).

As a result, an icon Defence appears in the list of apps
on the screen - usually on the second or third page.

Android

After opening Defence via the link using Chrome,
the Install option immediately appears at the top of the window;
you can tap this to create the icon.

This option disappears after approximately 5 seconds;
after that, you can tap on the three-dot menu at the top
and select Add to Home Screen (located quite far down
the list, so you will need to scroll) and then select Install.

Either way, an icon Defence will appear in the list of apps
- usually on the second or third page.

Mac

Starting with Mac OS 14, creating an icon in Safari works
similarly to how it does on iOS - that is, via the Share menu
followed by Add to Dock.

As a result, an icon Defence appears in the Dock as well as
in the Mac user's list of apps; you can then find the app
via Spotlight or (prior to OS 26) Launchpad.

On older Macs (up to OS 13), you can create an icon "manually"
by clicking once in the address bar at the top of Safari
and then dragging it to an empty spot on the screen
(dragging = moving while holding down the mouse button).
As a second step, you may wish to rename the icon,
which you do by clicking with the right hand mouse button
on it, then select the rename option.

Alternatively, on older Macs, you can install the Chrome browser,
which works just like it does on Windows (see below).

Windows

After clicking the link for Defence the address bar displays
- in the Edge browser: an indication that an app is available
- in the Chrome browser: an Install button
which subsequently shrinks down to one of the icons or .
If you click on this and confirm the installation, the program
will be added to the Start menu program list, and an icon
Defence will be placed on the desktop.

Screen Arrangement

(This text is also available in the program's Help menu.)

The window displaying Defence is divided
into several sections, which are accessed via tabs
located either along the top or the left edge.

The most important tab is the table window,
labeled Table or, on small screens, Ⓣ.
The cards of the players are displayed here.

The other tabs or windows are:

Offline Operation

After launching Defence, you can configure the offline
mode - a program feature that enables you to use the application
when your device is not connected to the Internet.

Instructions on how to do this can be found in the Help menu Ⓗ
of the program as Program Setup. There is no rush, but you must
do this before going offline, because to enable offline mode,
the device must still be connected to the Internet!
